To inform administrators and parents of new legislation that impacts Speech/Language (S/L) services for students with disabilities.
ALL PRINCIPALS:- Effective July 1, 2006, changes in Section 1003.01, Florida Statues, were made that affect speech/language (S/L) services for students with disabilities.
- Through the monitoring of Florida's implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) found that Florida school districts had failed to provide S/L services as related services for students with disabilities who needed the services to benefit from special education.
- As a result of the passage of House Bill 7087, districts were required to amend their current Policies and Procedures for the Provision of Specially Designed Instruction and Related Services for Exceptional Students (SP&P) document.
- Please see attached memorandum informing Regional Superintendents of this change in legislation.
- Please distribute the letter to parents (see attached) informing them of the change in legislation by Monday, May 7, 2007.

Monday, August 14, 2006 Tallahassee Betty Easley Conference Center, Room 166 Wednesday, August 16, 2006 Orlando Embassy Suites Orlando North Tuesday, August 29, 2006 Ft. Lauderdale Embassy Suites Ft. Lauderdale
"As we continue to move into the electronic age, it is important that state government be fully accessible to all Floridians," said DMS Secretary Tom Lewis, Jr. "This new legislation is an important first step in making the state's electronic information and technology accessible to persons with disabilities."
The AeIT Act requires DMS to adopt rules in cooperation with community and industry stakeholders to ensure the accessibility of government electronic information and compliance with federal Sections 508 accessibility standards. The rules development workshops hosted by DMS will provide citizens the opportunity to comment on the implementation of these new standards. Jacksonville, FL ~ August 29-30, 2006
Aug. 29- Behavior Solutions for Adolescents with Severely Limiting Autism
Maria Wheeler: Adolescence combined with severely limiting autism presents a unique challenge for the affected individual, families, educators and therapists. In this session, we will explore age appropriate interventions for addressing behavioral concerns including aggression, refusal to work, stripping, self-stimulation, ineffective communication, offensive communication, echolalia, sexual behavior, seizure-related behaviors, wandering, non-compliance and other behaviors that commonly interfere with social success and learning. Maria Wheeler is the author of "A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals with Autism," and "Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism and Related Disorders."
Aug. 30- Transitioning to Adulthood
Peter Gerhardt: Increasing attention is being paid to needs of learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as they enter adolescence and grow into adulthood. This workshop will provide an overview of this movement toward transition planning for competent adulthood. Social skills and sexuality will also be addressed in young adults with ASD.
